About
I’m Joseph Hosier, a derivatives salesperson based in London. I work with large UK-based corporations and financial sponsors to help them manage their exposure to financial market risks: primarily interest rate, cross-currency and inflation risks.

As interest rates fluctuate, corporations face volatility in profitability — something shareholders aren’t always keen to sit on. By entering into interest rate swaps and other financial contracts, my team helps these companies ‘lock in’ fixed rates for extended periods, providing stability in uncertain markets. On the flip side, where money is borrowed at a fixed rate of interest, we can help companies 'float' some of their debt, allowing them to benefit from potential future movements lower in interest rates.

Currency risks risks arise when a company has assets denominated in one currency, but finances these by borrowing money in a different currency. There is the risk that the currency they have borrowed becomes worth less (depreciates) in terms of the asset currency, and thus the equity value (Assets - Liabilities) is eroded. This risk can be mitigated through the use of cross-currency swaps.
Although my career has been rooted in the City, my interests and activities extend far beyond finance. Growing up in a farming family, I spent my teenage years cultivating fields in a John Deere tractor (on a good day), shoveling grain bins (on a bad one). Studying the International Baccalaureate, with its six subjects (+TOK +CAS: if you know, you know), gave me a broad foundation for what was to come. Later, I pursued a Master’s degree in Materials Science & Engineering at Imperial College London, which deepened my appreciation for the material world but only temporarily sated my curiosity about how the world truly works.
My career in finance began somewhat serendipitously, landing me in a team of brilliant minds who work hard to generate tangible value using abstract financial instruments. I’ve found this immensely rewarding, and eight years later, I still spend most of my daylight hours glowing in front of three (or more) 27-inch monitors, watching the financial markets flicker ever on.
Lately, much of my free time has been spent exploring the impact of Artificial Intelligence technology — how it will shape the future of work, the global economy, and our day-to-day lives.
I earned my Master’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Imperial College London, supported by the Ford Blue Oval academic scholarship. During my final (fourth) year, I had the privilege to participate in an Academic Exchange program at MIT, which provided an inspirational change of perspective after three years living and studying in London. I made life-changing connections in Cambridge, MA but most valuably found myself suddenly wide awake and with a hunger to put to good use the education I had been so fortunate to receive.
